What is Kybella and how does it work?

Kybella is a no incision, cosmetic treatment to eliminate fat under the chin through a series of injections. Allergan, the same company that makes Botox, manufactures the product.

The active ingredient is deoxycholic acid, which is naturally occurring in the body. This ingredient helps breakdown and absorb dietary fat. Injecting into fat destroys cells, prevents them from storing more fat, resulting in permanent results.

What does it treat?

Kybella treats double chin. We also use Kybella off label to remove excess fat anywhere on the body. The most common treatment locations are for:

  • Back fat

  • Arm pit fat

  • Butt fat

  • Love handles

  • Jowls

What is the treatment process like?

Prior to your appointment, it is important to have a thorough consultation to ensure that you are a candidate for therapy. Tell your provider if you're pregnant, breastfeeding, have trouble swallowing, or have bleeding issues. Make sure to schedule your treatment well before any events. Avoid Ibuprofen, aspirin or blood thinners prior to your appointment.

During your treatment appointment, we begin with custom mapping of injection sites based on your profile and unique anatomy. We will also make a decision regarding dose and injections sites.

We use topical numbing and ice to minimize discomfort. The actual procedure is a series of injections to the chin and neck area, that take a few minutes. The medication causes a burning sensation after injection but this discomfort decreases over 10-30 minutes.

How many treatment sessions will I need?

Each patient has a different chin profile, amount of fat and treatment goals, therefore the number of treatments will vary. Treatments are 4-6 weeks apart, with no more than six treatments recommended.

Typical sessions require 2 vials of Kybella, however there are certain areas that only require 1 vial. If you're worried about downtime or have had swelling in the past, we can try lowering the dose to 1 vial.

When will I see results?

You can expect to start seeing results after a few weeks as your body reabsorbs the fat cells. Results will continue to improve several months to a year after a treatment. Results are permanent however re-treatment may be necessary if you have weight gain.

Will my injections tighten the skin?

The injections only target the actual fat cells, so it does not affect the surrounding skin. Before getting injections, the consultation process checks your skin's elasticity and health to avoid loose skin. The gradual results will also help the skin retract slowly, over time.

What are the most common side effects?

The most common side effects of Kybella include swelling, bruising, redness, itching, numbness, nodules and burning. These side effects are usually self limited a resolve in as little as 30 minutes up to 2-4 weeks. Rare side effects include difficulty swallowing.

Overall, Kybella is a great treatment to dissolve unwanted fat. This leads to a more defined jawline and slimmer appearance. The procedure requires no incisions and is minimally invasive. A series of treatments is needed

  • How many units will I need?
Each patient has unique anatomy and goals so the dosage is impossible to guess without a thorough consultation by one of our experienced injectors. We will analyze your facial expressions from the beginning of encounter (often without you realizing) and take asymmetries into consideration along with the strength and direction of muscles fibers. Traditionally, for Botox and Xeomin, the companies set out guidelines on what doses should be given. For crows feet, they recommend ~10-16 units per side, for a total of 20-32 units. The area between your eyebrows requires 20 units and the forehead requires 20 units. Dysport is a little bit different in terms of dosing, but no need to worry about that. At Wellspring Skincare, we believe less is more. Clinically, we have amazing results by under treating patients and bringing them back in 2 weeks, where we can always add additional units if more are required. We want you to have natural looking, long lasting results.
  • Will the injections hurt?
Generally speaking, no. Each patient has a unique experience and reaction to pain but overall, your procedure will be quite painless. At Wellspring Skincare, we injection Botox, Xeomin, and Dysport using a small needle (similar to an insulin syringe) to minimize discomfort. The actual procedure often takes less than five minutes, making any discomfort short-lived and over quickly. If you have had a negative experience with toxin injections in the past or do not tolerate small amounts of pain well, please inform us and we can take extra steps with topical anesthetic for additional comfort. And for no additional charge, Dr. Corey and Susan will keep you distracted the entire time with funny jokes and countless good times.
  • Will I look fake or overdone?
Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin are dose and injector dependent. After a thorough evaluation of your anatomy and after discussing your treatment goals, our experienced providers will make a recommendation on dosage and locations. At Wellspring Skincare, we strive for natural, youthful looking results and discourage overuse of any treatment.
  • How do neurotoxins like Botox, Dysport or Xeomin work?
Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin all work by binding to nerve terminals, inhibiting musculature contractions, reducing the wrinkles and fine lines associated with facial expressions. Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin all are made from botulinum toxin but they differ in their side chains, allowing them to be branded differently.
  • Can you tell me more about the history of botulinum toxin?
It's funny you should ask, because the history of botulinum toxin is fascinating. The toxin is produced by a bacteria that was first discovered after food poisoning outbreaks in 1793, but the actual toxin wasn't discovered until much later. In the 1920's, the first scientists began to try to isolate the toxin however they weren't successful for another twenty years. In the 1970's, scientists first used botulinum toxin therapeutically to treat misalignment of the eyes, and they noticed that the wrinkles around the area were gone post-injection. Allergan was the first company to license the toxin, branding it Botox, cosmetically gaining FDA approval in 2002. Dysport was cosmetically approved in 2009, followed by Xeomin in 2011. Most recently, a new toxin named Daxxify was FDA approved with a longer duration of action!
